1.  We are at the beginning of our Israeli / Palestine studies and need to start figuring out how people view the situation and developing predictions about what will happen.

A) In your own words, write Peter David’s thesis statement in this article and then B) brainstorm three ways you would argue against this thesis or poke holes in the thesis based on his arguments.

As Israel’s Nation enters a tough time, and bitter emotions arose the people also want there individuality, but at the same time want their nation to mold into one, creating peace.
-They now have hard decisions to make which they have been able to put off for a long time, but cannot back down now. These decisions deal with peace and durability.
-Israelis are now also called Russians or Moroccans, Ashkenazim or even Sephardim. “So far shown little desire to leap into the melting pot”
-“ But many Israelis are eager to live as individuals”.

    1. The thesis statement is “Half a century after its birth, Israel at last feels confident of survival” (David 1).
*Israel and Pakistani people are still fighting and in danger.
*The terrorist groups have not been abolished and are killing a lot of Jewish people through suicide bombers and other terrorist acts.
*Other countries are coming in like the Russians and are beginning to change the political system which is in turn making the allies weaker.

Thesis: Half a century after its birth, Israel at last feels confident of survival (David 1). This is saying that after fifty years Israel still feels as if they have no problems surviving. However there are many statements in this article that go against this thesis statement.
 People are coming in from the S.U and living like their in their own little country. They are also finding ways to change the shape of Israel politics, where special interests groups are getting stronger and the traditional party allegiances are getting weaker. How is the country surviving when they have people coming and changing the government and how it is rules.
 Anther thing that goes against the thesis statement is the fact that there are a lot of terrorist groups who are still finding ways kill many of then Jewish people. Since this is the fact Israel is not really surviving because they have not found a way to stop the terrorist from killing many of the Jewish people.
 The Israel people are also not really surviving in my opinion because they have not found a way to create peace which is the most important thing to a country’s survival.
These are three ways that the article goes against this mans thesis statement. This country is not really surviving in my opinion because they are not finding ways to make peace which is really important to a country’s survival.

Over the last 100 years Israel has overcome tremendous obstacles in competing in the world economy, creating stable country but still has work to come in securing it’s people.

    - Economic modernization has raised the GDP per person to 17,000 put Israel within sticking distance of many Western European countries.
    - Israel is a much more vibrant democracy today more than it ever was in 3 decades.
    - Israel is joining the global trend towards a free market economy.

Thesis: Half a century its birth, Isreal at last feels confident of survival. This is stating that after the fall of Zionism does the Isralies still have the chance to rebuild themselves and their country and get back to an environment that is good for them such as free trade, and individuality.

B)I think starting all over is going to create mass chaos. Rebuilding a whole government means you have to start from nothing, their rules can create conflict and dissatisfy some of their citizens.
It seems weird to agree with this kind of statement because we read all of the bad stuff that happens in these countries and hearing any sort of rebuilding just seems like they are talking nonsense. Their economy is still very weak and their whole counrty seems to be on different pages.
I also agree with Erika on the fact that their country is safe and that they need to find peace with Iran because the Jews are not safe. There are mass killings everyday because of the lack of peace between them and Iran.

    A. Things are finally getting back to normal in Israel half a century after its birth.
~”Nobody feels like celebrating” Israel may be back to normal but the spirit is not. Too many back things have happened, like suicide bombings when people gather to celebrate.
~Also spirits arnt high because of unfinished business with the Zionist.
~Even though Jews from former Soviet Union who are now in Israel live in Israel they do not use Israel things like the newspaper, television, neighborhoods and even political party. Israel should incorporate them more into Israel society to make the country become closer and back to normal.

I agree with both Jamie and Erika that the thesis is “Half a century after its birth, Israel at last feels confident of survival” (David 1). There are many statements that go against this thesis.
    • “Israel has been in graver danger before and yet retained its high spirits. What is lacking now is the old feeling of unity in adversity” (David 1). This shows that enough though Israel survived it does not have the same feelings of unity as before.
    • “It is little surprise that one recent opinion survey, conducted at a time of sharpened tension in the peace process, nonetheless found that Israelis were more worried by this internal conflict between church and state than by the conflict with the Arabs” (David 2). This also shows that many people are not worried about the conflict outside the country but more worried about the conflict with the church and state.
    • “Indeed, the latest arrivals, the Jews from the former Soviet Union, who now form the biggest single ethnic group in Israel, have so far shown little desire to leap into an Israeli melting pot” (David 3). Even though Israel has confidence not every group wants to be part of the “Israel melting pot”.

Over the years Israel has been trying to gain peace but had failed due to untrustworthy countries.
    - its seems like no matter what Israel does they will still be attack and hated from the countries around it until they do some thing to fight back.
    - Israel should have never agreed with a peace treaty to give up land it just brought the enemy closer to the Israeli people.

In my own words Peter David’s thesis statement is: 50 years after it’s start, Israel feels confident that it will survive.
    - I don’t think “confident” is the right word to describe how Israel is feeling. They might hope that they will survive but as of now things aren’t going so smoothly. Palestine is still dead set on ridding all the Jews from the land.
-Iran as a radical tyrant as a president who is hell bent on wiping Israel off the Map. To make things worse, many believe they are close to having nuclear capabilities.
-To cap it all off, there are still many terrorist groups such as Hezbollah causing…well, terror.
In conclusion I think saying that Israel is “confident” is not true.

    1. a)The many years Israel has spent building up to the country they are today are beginning to show seeing as how they finnally feel confident of survival. “Half a century after its birth, Israel at last feels confident of survival” (David 1).
    b) -Constant fighting and terror are still going on within the Israeli/Palistani conflict.
-Migrated Soviet Union Jews recently entering the country are not willing to integrate into the “melting pot” of Israel.
-The Jewish people are worried about the church/state situation and that is not helping anything because it seems to be causing problems.

1A) Thesis statement: After 50 years, Israel is still struggling because it lacks peaceful relations with other countries, and faces political, religious, ethnic division at home.
1B) I would argue this thesis statement with:
-Israel has successfully created peace agreements with Egypt and
Jordan.  Just because the relations are “cold” does not mean they will not be honored.  In example, other countries do not care for the
US, but they still maintain peace with us.
-National pride is not a bad thing.  People can be proud of where they came from and still love their country.  If the Israelis did not want to live there, they would not have moved there.
-Similarly, competitive political parties are also not necessarily bad.  This enables people to see the different approaches to government and decide which one they prefer.  This is particularly important, because in a time of war the people should know their options and decide the course to take.

I think the thesis statement is: “Half a century its birth, Israel at last feels confident of survival” (David 1).

-Many countries are coming into Israel trying to reshape their country politically.
-Tjere are still many terrorists in the country killing Jewish people.
-Many of the people are still fighting; like for an example the Israelis and Pakistani’s.

    A) “Half a century after its birth, Israel at last feels confident of survival” (David 1) is Peter David’s thesis statement. David is saying that Israel is going to exist in the future and believes in themselves to survive.
    B) One thing I would argue against David Another thing is how is Israel going to survive with education system of certain Arab nations surrounding them, this teaching of hate needs to change or Israel is going to have a lot more problems in the future with these hating children growing up. Another thing is I believe Israel along with the world needs to find peace with Iran or do something about the problems they are facing with Iran. Until then more lives are going to be lost. Finally I agree with Kara, Israel won’t be able to survive if it has not been truly recognized as a state by many neighboring countries.

With half a century of existence behind, Israel feels assured that their shaky beginning is starting to become history and a more stable future lays before its people.

*Israel has never been supported by the U.N. to take military action against the Palestinian people, many of whom are pledged against Israel’s existence (as a jewish and/or zionist state) and its ideals.

*Violence against Israel shows no legitimate proof of ceasing or declining. Hate Propaganda fills the Palestinian school system and teaches that Israel does not extist. Palestinians have, very openly, pledged themselves to continuously kill, damage, and obliterate Isrealis and their country’s so called “Occupation of Palestine”. Example; The kidknapping, and keeping hostage of an Israeli soldier as a means of disgracing, and antagonizing the Israeli people this past summer of 2006.

*Palestine is not Israel’s only enemy. As far as Countries go, Iran is the most outspoken of the varying countries who denounce Israel’s existence, and whom openly support the destruction of Israel.
