1.  Over the last three years, the nuclear situation in Iran has worsened.  In your view, what are the worst two events or trends that have occurred and why?

2.  At this point, there are many options on the table including opening direct negotiations, economic sanctions, referring the problem to the Security Council or even direct force.  What should be done and why?  Use evidence from the articles to back up your point.

    1. In my view the worst two events or tends that have occurred are when Iran producted enriched uranium, which helped produce nuclear weapons. This has mad it easier for Iran to produce nuclear weapons. Also another bad event that has occurred is Iran not compiling with international safeguards against nuclear-weapons proliferation. This makes Iran seem like a threat to all countries.

    2. Direct negotiations should take place with the assistance of the Security Council. This will help settle disputes between Iran and other countries. “In a way, you have to go through a probation period, to build confidence again, before you can exercise your full rights” (Newsweek 2). This shows that Iran needs a time to rebuild its confidence and after a period of negotiations it will be possible.

    1. I think the worse two events are that Iran is trying to enrich enough Uranium so that they will be able to build nuclear weapons within months. Although Iran does not have enough enriched Uranium they are still trying to build enough so that they are able to make a nuclear bomb quickly. Another bad event is that Iran said that they would respond to sanctions by making their nuclear programs research even faster. They have begun testing new Uranium enrichment equipment that will allow them to double the ability of their small research facilities. These are the two bad events in Iran.
    2. I think that direct negotiation is in order. Iran already told the U.S that their response to economic sanctions was that they will speed up the nuclear research so that is not an option. I believe that negations will work because the U.S will be able to explain their opinion and they can talk it out. I also think that it is necessary to talk about the Treaty to make sure that Iran understands and will follow the treaty because Iran is trying to exercise rights that are stated in the treaty but, because the IAEA has not given a clear bill of health they are not allowed to access all of the rights. I think that Iran, the U.S and the U.N need to sit down and talk about the problem and to discuss the treaty.

    1. The two worst events that have occurred in my opinion is the fact that Iran stated testing their new uranium enrichment equipment that could make their capacity nearly double. The fact that they were told to stop should show the S.C that they are not going to but instead going to move ahead quickly. The second worst event is the fact that when IAEA went into inspect Iran’s labs he reported back that though the uranium has yet to be used it could be used with in the next week. Iran wants to use Nuclear power and it seems like they are going to do it with or without the U.N permission.
    2. The article said that the big five were talking about what kinds of sections they were going to use if any at all. However Russia and China feel like these sections are not going to work. I agree with them Iran is going to do what they want to do. I feel like nothing we do is going to stop them. Economic sanctions will stop them from getting the things that they need which could make them stop or could make them becomes even more secretive then they already are. We can use economic sections which might be the best option. This could scare Iran to understand that they need to stop what they are doing, however I feel that even with this they will still move forward as planed. I think that best way to delay Iran’s plans for Nuclear power is economic sanctions however I do not feel that this will stop their plans completely.

1.) -I think one of the worst events was the fact that Iran had produced Uranium, which is used to make nuclear weapons. This means, now Iran has way to produce these weapons, which gives us a reason to be nervous. One other bad event would be that international safeguards did not compile against nuclear-weapons proliferation. This makes other countries look at Iran as if they have a lot of power.
2.) The U.S. can’t use sanctions, because that will only cause harm by speeding up the production of nuclear research. So I think that there should be a direct negotiation. This way maybe it will help end arguments with Iran. Because the U.S. can talk there way out of things and that is much safer way of taking care of things.

    1. I think the worst event is that Iran is enriching uranium for nuclear weapons. The good thing is though that even with 2 cascades running it would still take years to enrich enough uranium to produce one nuclear weapon. Another event that is bad is that Iran wants all components of a weapon at hand. This leads people to believe that he intends to build one in weeks or months but Iran says they do not inted to build a weapon. So it is kind of confusing as to why he wants all components of a weapon.
    2. China, Russia and the US feel that there should be sanctions on Iran but have resisted. They feel like they will not work and may turn somewhere to get what they are not getting from China, Russia and the Us. “Penalizing them is not a colution” (Newsweek 2). Iran and North Korea can turn to eachother for help so to solve the sanctions problem China, Russia and the US have to talk to both North Korea and Iran.

    1. The Iranians have been seeking nuclear weapons back when they were at way with Iraq. The chance that a truely democratic Iraq might be a reality after a democratically elected government has been sworn in is a worry to Iran and other has been more vocal and threatening to other countries. He may be just trying to drive up the price of oil, but he mayserious about destroying Israel.
    2. Having just gone through similar situtions with Iraq and North Korea, talking, negotiations, or referring the problem to the UN sercurity council won’t work. As force it used as a last resort, the only thing to do is to try to get Iran’s near neighbors, Russia and China to put pressure on them and hope we can delay their progress toward building a weapon until the current leader goes out of power.

    1. In my view one of the worst trends that have occurred is the lenient attitude of the U.N. They gave Iran this second chance, and I am a strong believer of second chances but I believe they should have been stricter. Another bad event is how much uranium Iran has. This allows them to make bombs and one day maybe use them.
    2. The Security Council should now take action and either get concrete proof of all of Iran’s activities are safe and if they aren’t stop them from using nuclear energy and uranium. The article states how Russia and China don’t have complete faith and trust in Iran using the enriched uranium, and I agree. Economic sanctions should be placed, however I think more should be done that that.

    1. The worst event in my opinion is the enriching uranium situation. This means that the Iranians are already one step farther in the process to creating these nuclear bombs. It is frightening to see that their process in these nuclear bombs is increasing, but hopefully the technical difficulties with the engineers will slow down the process.
the second worst thing would have to be the fact the US proficent with their nuclear research and kind of kept it on hold as these Iranians are getting closer to destroying us.
    2. I was kinda confused with this questions. I think it mainly means how to resolve the situation and i wish i could answer that as well. All i know is we need to stop them from further process so something with economics could work, I do not believe that fighting is going to resolve anything. Negotations could take place to find guidlines and a general concensus

    1. The worst events to happen during the nuclear crisis in Iran have been the U.S has been fighting against Iran for there chance to have nuclear capablities. Another they would be to enrich enough uranium so that Iran would be able to create and build nuclear builds inside of a year.

    2. I think that the U.S should calm down and wait a couple of months. The U.S is not helping anyone when saying that we need to attack and get rid of the nuclear capabilites they have right now. What I say the people should do is to back off Iran for right now and if we get evidence that Iran is creating nuclear bombs we should go to the U.N and Security Council to stop Iran from doing harm to anyone.

    1. The worst two trends, in my opinion, are:
A- The involvement of China and Russia in the Security Council debates about how to handle the Iranian situation. There is a strong conflict of interest there as they are business associates of Iran. They have a right to be part of the Security Council in general, but they should recluse them selves in these debates. With them still on board, negotiations that will be affective will not take place.
B- I agree with Alli and Jamie that the second worst event is Iran’s refusal to comply with the IAEA. They way they are behaving is immature. They sign a nuclear agreement and then go back on their word, bulldoze Lavizan when the IAEA wanted to inspect it, and they refuse to slow down or stop their nuclear development even after the international community asked them to. Part of being in power is knowing when to stand up for your country and when to compromise. If president Ahmadinejad wants Iran to be taken seriously and respected, then he must first return show respect to other countries.
    2. I believe that we should attempt negotiations. After the article we read in Newsweek, it is clear that what Iran really wants respect. If we talk to them and show them we consider their desire for nuclear power important, maybe they will calm down. I think at this point, they are so close that we should allow them nuclear power for energy. This would remove some of the tension surrounding the issue. Also, “there’s nothing in the Non-Proliferation Treaty itself to prevent them from enriching uranium” (Dickey 1). We need to show we are willing to negotiate to their needs, especially if “they are really not very far- a few months- from a weapon” (Elbaradei 2). If we get in good with them now, maybe we can convince them to slow down and take nuclear power on step at a time. I realize that this is rather optimistic, but they are a powerful country with a powerful government, why not be on their good side?

    1. In my opinion the two worst events or trends that has happened in Iran is that one; they enriched the uranium which makes it more possible for them to develope a bomb. Secondly, another bad thing is that Iran said that they would make their nuclear research programs even faster. Iran is trying to be a world power and not let anyone put them down.
    2. I think that they should just let Iran do there thing but keep a close eye on them. If you try to do sanctions thats just going to piss them off and they might try using there weapons on us. Iran is doing this for power and to let people know what their capable of. So, just let them think they got our support and what we do is just keep a close eye on them and if they start doing things that are supicious…then we can do military actions.

    1. The two worst events or trends that have happened over the past two years in Iran are;

Iran recieveing nuclear research equipment and the security council avoiding talks with Iran about nuclear weapons.

    2. I believe that there should be direct negotiations with Iran about the use of nuclear weapons by the country. The U.S.’s director of national intelligence believes that Iran will have developed a nuclear weapon within 4-10 years. I think that this is not good and should be addressed immediatly to stop the negative uses of nuclear weapons.

1)I think the two biggest problems over the last three year in Irans developement of a nuclear war head are that fact that they have Uranium and this can eventually turn into a weapon and create a nuke and they have plenty of it, And the fact they wont cooperate with the IAEA because this means we are not updated on where they are with their nuclear power they can develope the bomb whenever they want and we probably would never know if they arent letting them inspect what they are doing.

2)I think the security concil should send in troops with the inspector and say look if u dont let us in then we are taking you down so then the nuclear plant is forced to open its doors to inspectors. Like Elbaradei says in the article and I quote “Well they may not seem to care, But if I say that i am not able to confirm the peaceful nature of the program after three years of intensive work, well thats a conclusion that’s going to reverberate,I think,Around the world. This should show us that their program is not peaceful and that we shouldnt be peaceful with them.

    1. One of the worst events to happen in Iran in terms of nuclear power is when the country acquired enrished uranium. This enabled them to produce nuclear weapons in a matter of very little time. Another one of the worst events is when Iran refused to talk with the IAEA. This shows that they are trying to hide something and that means that they could be hiding their nuclear capabilities.

    2. I think the best thing to do is to conduct direct negotiations. If they will not talk with the IAEA it is possible they will not talk to the Security Council, economic sanctions i dont think will do much, and direct force will only lead to more problems. If we think up direct negotiations with Iran their is a good chance we will be able to come to terms and finally agree and stop this fighting.
