This article poses a number of questions that I have tweaked slightly for the blog.  Pick two of them to answer and explain your answers as much as possible.

1.  Will this man get the bomb?

2.  What does Iran want?

3.  Is Iran close to getting the bomb?

4.  Why is Iran picking a fight?

5.  Which option should the U.S. take?

2.)Iran wants to feel dominant. ” RIght now, Iran is riding high….Most important, the U.S. is tied down, its influence and political capital in the region at an all time low”.
5.) ” Instead of getting scared and spooked, America should veiw tehran with a healthy dose of calm and confidence”.

    2. I agree with Shawna Iran wants to feel dominated but in away that can’t b/c Iran is ruled by a failed regimes that can not be modernized. Even though right now they are “riding high on oil prices” due to that Iran’s neighboring countries are severely being weakened. I also think that Iran is isolated from the world and they don’t know how not to be b/c for generations they have been taught that Washington hates them so in a way that is our problem they feel that way. And the questioned posed in the article should be looked into more between the two.
    4. Iran is picking a fight b/c the U.S is determined to prevent a developing country from moving ahead technologically.

    1. 2- Iran wants to have power and as Shawna said, feel dominant. They also wish Israel gives away their land to the Palestinians. All these wants are not positive, which could only mean negative things could come out of their goals.
    2. 5- U.S should choose a side of which religious group they support, the Sunni or Shiite and some how prove to the world how horrible their president is. The first essay Lally was trying to get the president to reiterate his horrible thoughts of Israel, but instead he got touchy and tip toed around the matter, “Is this a test? Do you respect the right to self determination for the Palestinian nation? Yes or no?” Amhamdinejad says in defense.

    2. Iran wants to be able to control their own actions and like Shawna said…”feel dominant.” Iran feels as if the United States talks and acts like they own the whole world and they really dont like that.
    4. Iran is picking a fight because they dont want nobody telling them what to do. “…A section of the U.S. administration- does not create the right circumstances. They believe that they own the entire world, so they speak from that position, looking down at us(Weymouth 31)”. Iran just wants to be able to run their own country and they feel as if the U.S. is trying to take over Iran. We should just leave them alone…let them do whatever they want.

    2. I also agree with everyone Iran is craving for power they want to be the stronghold of the Middle east claiming that it will benefit the region because Iran is a country with a deep culture and has always been a peaceful country as Ahmadinejad says.

    5. Iran is picking a fight again to feel powerful. The U.S. is trying to tell them what they can or cannot do and by doing this they are making Iran fell like they are supposed to bow down to the U.S. like everyone else preety much does

  • 7    globalspartan // Oct 25, 2006 at 10:47 am

    4. Iran is picking a fight because that is all that they know how to do. They want to feel like the most powerful of them all and by picking these unimportant fights with random countries they feel like they can do anything.

    5. The option that I believe the U.S. should take is to try their best to keep themselves out of a war with other countries that are started over small (pardon my french) crapola.

Mr.Mac…these are the real answers 2 the question haha cuz I did these questions for last nites hw…

    2. Iran wants to be able to creat bombs within their country because I think they feel like their weak without bombs. There Iranian Officials say that their “uranium-enrichment activities are purely for energy or research purposes rather than military ones.”

    3. I think that Iran is not going to have a bomb within the next few years but I think that they will get one in the next 5 to 10 years. The IAEA says that “Iran has the knowledge but not the capacity to make weapons.” Its only time till Iran gets a bomb because it seems they really want to wipe Israel off the map because of their previous missle. If they get enough motivation I believe they’ll make things happen.

    2. Iran wants a number of things that all have to do with being given the ability to produce Nuclear weapons. Iran feels that they deserve the same rights that any other countries have the right better technology. They said that they are just looking for a “long term energy future” (Mcgeary 2). However no one believes that this is all Iran wants because they were caught making enriched uranium and they were hiding this from IAEA. The secret lab was exposed in the 2002 which make people think that they do not just want to better their technology. Iran says that all they want is the ability to have what everyone else in the world has.
    3. Iran is not really close to getting the bomb. Iran might not be able to hand the production of the bomb. IAEA thinks that Iran has the knowledge to make the bombs but they do not have the capacity to make the weapons. Although Iran has the many materials that they need to make the bomb many think that they have enough resources to make two bombs a year. Also if Iran gets the ability to make these bombs many people already know that they might use to bomb to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. Iran has everything that they need to make the bomb however; they really are not very close to getting the bomb because they are not really ready to make them yet.

    1. I believe that he will get the bomb. Although the country doesn’t have nukes yet a lot of the world believes that they will build them. That is why diplomats in the U.S and Europe are trying to stop Iran from building the nukes. The U.S and Europe have convinced Russia and China to help them in reporting that Iran has not cooperated with the internal demands. Just last week the U.S began to push the security council to begin demanding that Iran open it’s books and labs to make sure that they are not building nukes. The West believes that Iran is trying to develop a way to make the bomb quickly. Although the U.S and Security Council are trying to prevent the building of the bomb it is pretty obvious that Iran is doing all that it can to build this bomb. And if Iran will not allow the U.N to see it’s books there is no way in knowing that he has not already begun to build the bomb and if he hasn’t he will begin soon.
    3. IAEA says that Iran has the knowledge but not the ability to create this bomb. Some experts say that if Iran gets the capability to build the bombs they will be able to build two bombs a year. If Iran continues to build technology they will be able to build a bomb within the next ten years. In 2004 Iran built three missiles that had a long enough range to reach Israel. So yes I do believe that they are close to getting the bomb.

    2. Iran wants to be able to use technology as much as everyone else does. Countries think that Iran wants more out of the technology but just arn’t saying it. They want the same respect out of it as other countries do. Iran just wants to use technology for research purposes and for energy.
    3. Iran is about a decade away from getting the bomb which in not necessarily close. The IAEA has said that Iran has the knownledge but not the capacity. The scary thing about Iran getting the bomb is that they plan to wipe Israel off the map.

  • 13    globalspartan // Oct 25, 2006 at 9:35 pm

    2. Iran wants to be powerful and a treat to other countries. “Iranians say they have the same rights as other countries to technology and are just looking out for their long-term energy future” (McGeary 2).
    3. Iran is not very close to getting the bomb. But within sometime it may be possible for Iran to develop bombs. “Thus far, the IAEA says, iran has the knowledge but not the capacity to make weapons. Some experts say that if Iran’s enrichment facilities become fully operational, they could churn out enough material to construct two bombs a year” (McGeary 3).

    2. The Iranies want power. Bottom line. They want to be able to create these weapons. Weapons show strength, knowledge and intimidation.
    4. Iran seems to be picking a fight with the US because we are stopping them from proceeding in the technological advantages. I believe that they dont like our authority and our power over them and that is why they are rebelling towards us because we are limiting their power.

2.) Iran wants the freedom to use nuclear energy. Why Should Iran be denied the request? Is it truly fair for a Country’s govt., who has and continues to utilize Nuclear Power, to claim that they want to spread the joys of democracy and yet call for anti-nuclear sanctions against another up and coming country? I don not think that it is fair. The spreading democracy should include equality and not hypocracy, freedoms and not sanctions, VERBAL communications and not war.

    2. In technical terms, Iran wants to be allowed to continue with the Uraniam enriching process that will allow it to have more efficient energy today and bombs down the road. To have nuclear bombs represents getting respect and becoming a powerful international force. Having the bomb would also satiate another desire of theirs: security. They would not feel threatened by any more invasions from their neighbors or anybody else if they had nuclear capabilities.
    4. Iran is picking a fight because they are the ones that have been picked on in the past. They have been invaded by their neighbors and aren’t considered a geopolitical force. They want to win some respect and national pride. It’s not even that all of Iran is picking a fight, it is largely President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He has something to prove because he was less than qualified for the presidential position compared to other candidates. The rest of the Iranian government are open to negotiations, so Ahmadinejad looked over them and went right to the people, and won their support. To clarify this: the president wants nuclear arms and his goading his people on, convincing them it is what they want.

    1. 2- Iran wants to receive the technology that the nuclear weapon countries do. They say that it is only for nuclear energy which could probably help give energy to many different things that would need that large amount of energy. They also probably want the technology to make weapons and gain power.
    2. 4- Iran is picking a fight because they believe they have been wronged to many times. In the past they have been attacked by the world and even their neighbors. Now Ahmandinejad wants to prove to the world that he has power and he craves the nuclear technology.

    1) This man will get a bomb eventually because it seems like the U.N.’s hands are tied because Russia doesnt want to get involved in the subject. “Histroy has already shown how difficult it is to curb the nuclear ambitions of a state that is determined to get the bomb”(Mcgeary 2). Also a U.S. official said they are moving rapidly and stated “they know what they are doing”.

2)Iran wants to feel powerful and creat their own bombs in their own country. They say that they should have the rights that all nuclear powered countrys do, but thee fact is they do. They are aloud to have nuclear powerplants for energy as long as they let in the IAEA to check in on what they are doing if they dont then they look suspicous.

    2. Iran wants the bomb because with the bomb they will nuclear capabilities they want to energy but all people really know that all this man really wants is the bomb to use and destroy other countries.
    4. Iran is picking a fighting because they believe they should have the right to nuclear capabilities just like any other country. The only problem Iran wants the nuclear capabilities because they want to scare other counties and make they do what they want.

    4. Iran is picking a fight with the U.S. because we do not even want to discuss Iran being able to use the nuclear weapons. The fact that Iran and Iraq have been fighting for the past almost 60 years is not helping the fact that they want nuclear weapons.

    5. The U.S. should try to avoid having to share the nuclear ideas with Iran. A country that has been in so many wars for such a long period of time should not have access to these discoveries.

    Peter Roman
2- Iran wants to assert itself as a world power. Iran also has a large supply of oil that it depends on. Logically it is trying to use nuclear power to economize on its chief export. Though many fear Iran will bring instability to the Middle East, some believe that Iran is merely trying to industrialize and provide cheap power to its population as to spur modernization. Iran is an Islamic republic and has not gained recognition from the U.S. as a legitimate government; this fact is only polarizing its struggle to legitimize itself. Iran should not be kept distant as an enemy, but instead, it should be worked with to educate its people. Iranians view themselves as the exploited underdogs, and they will be inclined to take more desperate measures in securing their priorities. The author believes that Islamic radicalism will wane with new policy aimed at positively embracing this alienated country.

Observation- Why didn’t America do anything in Afghanistan when its fundamentalist, oppressive Taliban government was publicly executing moderate citizens? After all, we had provided CIA training and armaments to the blossoming radical Islam stronghold.
If the assumption that Iran is indeed bent on producing nuclear weapons is made, then, wouldn’t further alienating it make it that much more bent on obtaining this strategic bargaining chip?
Well, why can’t America work with a conservative Islamic republic to break fresh ground and build some kind of bilateral relationship? Instead, we buttheads with close allies in the United Nations to install further isolationist policy. While we have been distancing ourselves from Iran, France, Russia and China have been forming economic and political ties that they are somewhat reluctant to sever. The latter two, Russia and China are close economic partner with Iran; The U.S. will end up disrupting relations with both of these countries if it does not take a different stance on Iran.

    2. what iran whants is to feel seen and they do this by trying to be as dominant as possible. and with a bomb that can blow up just about any country this becomes much more easily done.
    5. what the us should do about this is they should stop treating iran as both a child and somthing to only toutch witha 10 foot stick. iran should be treated with respect and that is all that they are looking for, the rspect of the larger countries to see them as a country that is not just sitting on a map.

    2. Iran wants more power and control in its region. It fought a long, costly war with Iraq in which a large number of Iranians died. A nuclear bomb would give it security from its neighbors as they have a different ethnic heritage from their neighboring arab states and practice the shiite form of Islam which is not accepted by all it neighbors. It seems to want the option to destroy Israel, as it continually makes statements to that effect and supports the terroists groups that are in constant war with Israel. Although Iran has plenty of oil, they don’t refine into gasoline and they want nuclear power to provide cheap electricity.
    5. Neither of the two main options seem very good. Diplomacy doesn’t seem to have a chance to work without Russia and China putting pressure on Iran. Iran’s leaders have shown for decades now that they are going to do whatever they want and will keep trying to destroy Israel. Bombing enough of Iran’s bomb making areas would be expensive and because they are spread out and hidden probably wouldn’t work. The US approach should be to support a change of Iran’s leader from within the moderate people in Iran and hope that it takes them a long time to build a nuclear weapon.

    2. What Iran wants is simple, power. They want as much power in the world as countries like the US or Russia has. They want to do whatever it will take to get to that point but are being held back by the superpowers.

    4. Iran in picking a fight because they feel it is unfair for many countries in our world to have all the nuclear capabilies thay want and for them to be stripped of all possible capabilites. They do not see why they are not allowed to have nuclear power and everyone else can.
