1.) The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus impacts other countries. The fear of annihilation of the Tutsis and the Domination of the Hutus raised the rebellion in other bordering areas. Which slows down the process towards peace. It also prevents there from being any peace talks across borders.
2.) Three main reasons for conflict in central Africa, other than ethnic differences: Economics, geopolitical interests, and security within the government and politics. Bad governance is the main cause of conflict, which also includes the inclusion and exclusion of politics.
3.) A comment that was interesting to me was…“Without peace in the DRC, there can be no peace in the region”.

1. The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus had an important impact beyond just one nation’s borders is becuase the unequal oppurtunities enabled ethnic minorities to control the state and its resources. Later leading to the creations on a genocide. It also sharpened political and ethnic cleavages.
2. 1. unequal oppurtunities
2. attempts at restoring peace
3.lack of natural resources
In my mind i think the lack of natural resources becuase the people in the towns are losing all of there resources just becuase of the war they are taking away from all the village people.
3. The whole issue of genocide. I always hear it in the news and in global class but i never really put in enough effort to understand it, but now when i read it in a context of all this heartbreaking stuff it sparks my interest.

1. The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has had an important impact beyond just ones nation’s border because the failure of the Hutu government to accommodate members of the Tutsi ethnic group resulted in the genocide of 1994. It has also often stalled the implementation of peace accords.
2. Three reasons for conflict in Central Africa are the competition for land, resources and government control of the major cash crops and the myraid interests tied to the DRC’s huge natural resources that has earned it the French characterization of scandale geologique. I think the most important to deal with is the resources and government control of major cash crops because by having the government in control they decided the price and how much they sell which would make people not be able to buy things or there may not be enough for people.
3. One issue that caught my attention in that to remain in power, regimes rely on violence to regulate internal political and other differences. This shows me that the regimes don’t have full power and can be brought down at any time with the right number of people and forces.

1. After the genocide of 1994 between in Rwanda, refugees went into a Congo and created a sercurity problem in that country.
2. 1) corrupt leaders
2) Lack of democracy
3) Poor transportation network
1) Corrupt leaders is the most important problem to deal with because they are the ones controling the country for the benefits of a few people only.
3. The refugees and foreign armies can easily get into the country and hide out and cause trouble becuase the country is so large and its transportation network is poor. The central government has a hardtime controling outlying areas.

1. The conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has a very important impact on more than one nations borders because there is an on-going war going on between Burundi and Rwanda. The wars going on between those group of people killed more than 600,000 people. This means many people are being killed. Then they talk about how they make peacemaking efforts, but how are they making them when they keep on killing each other.
2. The three main reasons for conflict in Central Africa besides ethnic differences is resources, land and government control. The most important conflict I think is government control because it becomes a huge conflict when different groups of people believe in different things. Then the government runs the nation by their rules and some people may not like how they run it.
3. One issue that caught my attention was when the author said, “In this sub-region, the epicenter of conflict is constantly shifting from one country to another.” When I read that it really hit me cause it made me think that people in Africa are always fighting because so many people believe in different things.

1. The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has had an important impact beyond just one nation’s borders. This conflict has enabled ethnic minorities to control the state and its recourses. In Rwanda, the failure of the Hutu government to accommodate members of the Tutsi ethnic group resulted in the genocide of 1994.
2. Three reasons for conflict in central Africa beyond ethnic differences are political governance, the economic factors fueling conflicts, and the geopolitical interests of various actors. The political governance is the most important to deal with. This is the most important factor because without a strong leader it will be hard to find support among the citizens. Also without a powerful leader nothing will be done about the problems they are now facing.
3. One issue that caught my attention that I would like to explore further was the child solider phenomenon. This interested me because I find this ridiculous that little kids have to fight for something they might not even understand.

1. The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and Hutus has made an impact beyond just one nation’s borders, mainly in the case of Rwanda and Burundi. In Burundi the fear of the Hutus taking over has delayed the finalization of peace accords and in Rwanda, when the Hutu government failed to accommodate members of the Tutsis, the genocide of 94′ proceeded.
2. Three reasons for conflict in Central Africa, ignoring ethnic differences, include the fight over where democracy stands in Africa, natural resources and geopolitical interests. The most important of these conflicts to deal with is where democracy stands in Africa. This is important because historically it is true that democracy does not have a very good reputation in Central Africa, and without it the people are not getting their say in what goes on and all will not be fair.
3. One issue that caught my eye and made me want to research it further was the failure of many regional efforts for peace including the Arusha Peace Accord for Rwanda in 93′, the Lusaka Accord for the DRC in 99′ and the Peace and Reconciliation Accord for Burundi in 99′. This interests me because these are a series of accords that have all failed and it makes me wonder if peace could ever truly be reached.

1. The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has not only impacted their nation’s borders, but also other countries. When the Hutu government failed in the correspondence of the Tutsi ethnic group, the genocide of 1994 occurred. The conflict has also impacted Burundi, with the country’s worry of the Hutu government taking over, it often delays the completion of peace treaties. It also affected Zaire, when Mobuto Sese Seko did not succeed in resolving the Congolese of Rwandese descent crisis of citizenship, which also led to the rebellion that gave Laurent Kabila power in 1997. Even though Kabila came to power, he did not accomplish what the people wanted, which led to another rebellion, this time in Eastern Congo, which many believe may play a part in his assassination in January 2001.
2. Three reasons for conflict in Central Africa are:
a) economic factors fueling conflicts
b) corrupt leaders and views for the future
c) regional responses to conflicts
The reason for conflict in Central Africa that I think is most important to deal with is the corrupt leaders because their views for the country are not always helpful or successful. Most the time, it tends to be destructive and many citizens of the country end up losing more than they began with.
3. One issue that caught my attention was the issues on children soldiers and how they are a large percentage in the rebel armies and militia groups. It interested me because I want to learn how these children get caught up in such vicious circumstances and what they could have done to avoid it.

1. The conflict between the Tutsis and Hutu affect people beyond one nation’s borders because it angers people of that country’s descent causing unrest in other countries. Burundi and Rwanda have both faces massive loss of human life in each group’s attempt to rectify the wrongs against their people. Most horrific of these fights was the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, like Alli and Dylan pointed out. The minorities controlling the government in both these countries also create unfair access the resources under the control of these nations. This in turn affects the entire global market.
2. a. Unequal access to a rich supply of resources
b. Constant fear of attack due to the large amount of
fire arms and rebel groups
c. Lack of support for democratic elections
The most important among these, in my opinion, is the flow of firearms into these countries. I find this most disturbing because the guns are coming from countries such as our own, as well as others in Europe and Asia. We are therefore enabling the conflict in Africa to continue to escalate at a terrifying rate. This point also hits close to home because I am personally for tight restrictions on the sales of firearms; the fact we are sending them over seas is just frightening.
3. Like Maggie, the issue the got my attention was the children soldiers. That is disturbing on many levels that children are out there engaging in combat. This means that in one or two decades the adults in Africa will all be trained fighters who have been raised to know no other life than that of bloody conflict. The violence these children have seen would require years of intensive therapy to allow them to function normally in society. Another reason this grabbed me so hard is because we live in a country where we place high value in the lives of children. Everything from their protection, health to their education is the concern of all. How anyone could hand a child a gun and tell them to go out there and kill is beyond me.

1. The Intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus is important because it has let people see what can happen when people fight between each other and that is death and anguish.
2. Three reasons for conflict beyond ethnic difference are unequal access to opportunities, unable to control the countries people and resources, and the need to the most powerful. Of these conflicts I believe the most important would be the need to be the most powerful because the more they fight to show who is stronger the longer it will take to the two tribes to come to peace and understanding.
3. One thing that interesting me in this reading was the part were Central Africans and West Africans both sell goods like gold, coffee, diamonds, and timber to buy troops, gain military support, acquire weapons, and to finance war effort. This part interested me because all the things they bought with the money none of the things I believe brought good to the counties because all they are doing with the money is buying things for war, that is a good thing for this region because there is a lot of fighting but I believe if they used the money for something different like economic help the counties would profit more in the long run.

1. The inter-group conflict has not only affected Rwanda and Burundi but it has also moved into Congo. Both the Tutsis and the Hutus want to be in power. However when the Hutus were in power the Tutsis just rebelled against them which created a genocide. In order to gain power they resort to violence even going as far as assassinating rulers. While the Hutus was in charge they did not accommodate the Tutsis. This conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has impacted a lot of people.
2. Conflict in Central Africa is revolved around one thing the resources. The resources in Africa include things like precious medals and diamonds. Eastern Congo has the richest columbite-tantalite which is worth two hundred dollars a pound. This resource is something that makes Africa a lot of money. Rwanda and Uganda saw the wealth that was being made by this resource which is why they went into Congo and began to sell the columbite-tantalite to the U.S making over ninety million dollars. Angola, Zimbabwe and Namibia thought that this was wrong which eventually caused a war over who was right. The resources caused a division and a war. The biggest conflict was the Rwandese and Uganda government taking the resources out of Congo. They were not entitled to these resources nor did they have any right to come in and take the resources. They were in Congo which means that Congo is the only state that can receive the money earned by the selling of these resources.
3. I would like to know more about the Tutsis and the Hutus and what splits them up and when the distinct split took place. This interests me because these groups are fighting and causing a lot of tension in Africa and I would like to know what makes them so passionate about the rebellion against one another.

1. The inter-group conflict has gone way beyond nation’s borders in many ways. The Hutu and Tutsi both want power and they think the only way to get that power is though violence. The Hutu government was in power but the Tutsi wanted power so the two groups created enormous amounts of violence killing many. This went beyond the nation’s border when the leader of Congo Laurent Kabila was killed for power. These two groups have gone really far to get power, land and recourses. They are willing to kill anyone from the other group who stands in their way. This is the reason why this inter-group conflict between the Hutu and the Tutsi has become such a huge problem.
2. Central Africa is having huge conflicts over money and recourses. One of conflicts is the fact that Uganda and Rwanda both feel entitled to some of the wealth that is held in Congo. Another conflict is that fact that these two countries went in the Congo and started exporting the goods with no permission. The last major conflict is that the states are spilt there are Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi on one side and Angola, Zimbabwe, and Namibia on the other causing a war. The war was about the resources and who was entitled to have and sell them. The most important conflict in my opinion is that fact that Rwanda and Uganda went in and started selling the goods that were in Congo’s possession. This is most important because if they had not does this then their would have not been a war started at all.
3. The one issue that interested me the most was the war over the Congo’s resources. I would like to know where these resources came from and how they were discovered. I would also like to know what Congo was doing when Uganda and Rwanda were exporting the goods from their land. This issue interested me because I never thought that these counties had so much money. I was also interested because these resources cause such a huge war and disagreement.

1) The impact of the fight between the Tutsis and Hutus has an important
Role on more then one country because it shows how ethnic differences can start conflict in politics. In Rwanda the Hutu government failed to accommodate members of the Tutsi and this resulted in the genocide of 1994, and in Burundi the Hutu also was dominant but when the Tutsi were excluded this brought violence into the country.
2) A. Lack of strong government
B. The lack of controlling their resources
C. Territorial issues
I think the lack of a strong government is the biggest issue Central Africa has because they have the most power to make the changes and create peace.
3) One topic I would like to research farther in this reading is the issue on the child soldier’s phenomenon I think it is ridiculous because they make up a large percentage of rebel armies and militia groups.

1. The conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus effects many neighboring countries in a negative way. The violence resulted in the devastating genocide of the Tutsis in 1994. This all happened due to the Hutu goverments negative, violent actions.
2. Beyond ethinic differences, the reason for much conflict lies in the social and economic area. Frustration from the Tutsis and various ranging classes led to an eruption in wide spread violence stretching to many other countries.
3. I would like to learn more about the genocide. It’s hard to believe there could be that much hate for someone.

1. the conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has caused the death of many not in either group. like the UN members that were caught up in the trouble, or just protecting the Tutsis. also the arms brought in are from other countries and so many countries have been selling guns to the military.
2. some problems are the uneven spreading of natural recources between the people. the many problems in the goverment cause problems everywhere. and a big problem is that the diffrence in to groups its like the diffrence between the way black people used toi be treated and the way whites treated them.
3. i would like to know about the Tutsis, and the Hutus and what brought the driirences about and why.

1. The intergroup conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has impacted way beyond their borders. Both groups want to be in power and to achieve their goals they use violence. This has affected not only Rwanda but Burandi and Congo too. The members of these groups use violence to achieve their goals and murder leaders. This has effected and ruined many peoples lives.
2. Three reasons for conflict in central Africa are economic struggles, another is that Rwanda and Uganda both went into the Congo and got goods without permission, and a third reason is the non-existing democracy in Africa. As leaders today are trying to do in other nations, creating a solid successful democracy is the way to a thriving nation. The rights of the people are most important and are obviously not happening in Africa.
3. One issue that caught my attention was the children soldiers. If children are educated since their young to fight and kill, when they grow up violence will be the only thing they know. They may end up like the horrible men that trapped them into fighting.

1. The conflict between the Tutsis and the Hutus has had an important impact beyond just one nations border because the ever spreding battle between the two had a huge impact on not only Rwanda and Burundi, but also the Congo. It is amazing to think that two ethnic groups differences could detonate into something as large as the fight between the countries.
2. Three reasons for conflict in central Africa are the conflict for land, the control of cash crops, and the most important being the failure to lock in a peace aggrement after the marathon negotiations in March 2002.
